Donnie Vie sounds as good as ever on the melancholy duo ‘Joni Lynn’ and ‘Rollaway’ and is equally at home on the upbeat rocker ‘High’ as he is on the sublime pop tune ‘Sometimes’. From the cleverly off-key title track with its modern vocal effects to the Beatles pastiches ‘Fine Line’ and ‘Altered State’, ‘Dissonance’ is melodic and tuneful and sounds exactly like you want Enuff Z’Nuff to sound. The band have recaptured the vibe they had on their first few albums, albeit with a harder edge and grittier lyrical content. Lee on lead guitar, as well as Vinnie Castaldo (who also produced the album) on drums. On this outing Vie and bassist Chip Z’Nuff are joined, rather surprisingly, by Jake E. Enuff Z'Nuff's best album for quite some time.Īfter a period of touring without Donnie Vie, the singer returned to the Enuff Z’Nuff fold in time to record this album from last year for their Japanese label, which gets a proper release here through the Grind That Axe imprint of popular re-issue label Rock Candy, and with a couple of bonus tracks too! To be honest latter day EZN albums have been a bit hit and miss to me, but the faith that Derek Oliver at Grind That Axe has in the band is obviously well founded as ‘Dissonance’ is easily their best album for quite some time.
